What Is Xarelto®?
Xarelto® is used to help prevent the development of blood clots. This medication is commonly used with patients undergoing joint replacement therapy, since they are more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Many patients with atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeats, also take this drug. In recent years, Xarelto® has largely replaced another blood thinner, warfarin (Coumadin® and Jantoven®), since the new drug does not require regular blood testing. However, in many circumstances, Xarelto® has proved to be far more dangerous than this older medication.
There have been instances in which Xarelto® caused blood clots to migrate.
Xarelto® and Uncontrollable Bleeding
Xarelto® can lead to bleeding, which is not an uncommon side effect for blood thinners. However, unlike other brands, Xarelto® does not have an antidote and poses an extremely high risk for uncontrollable internal bleeding. Irreversible bleeding may occur after some type of trauma or can arise seemingly without cause. In many cases, internal hemorrhaging can be fatal. In fact, rivaroxaban, the generic name for the drug, is so risky that the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) listed it as one of the most dangerous of the anticoagulant drugs.
Xarelto® and Blood Clots
Although Xarelto® is intended to prevent blood clots, there have been instances in which the medication has instead caused clots to migrate. When this occurs, the clots can block blood flow to the lungs in what is known as a pulmonary embolism. In an ISMP report, the Institute stated that patients taking Xarelto® had suffered 158 embolic-thrombotic events in the first quarter of 2012 alone, and that younger patients were developing severe blood clots despite the medication.
Xarelto® and Post-Surgical Infections
Although doctors often prescribe Xarelto® to patients undergoing joint replacement, the drug can also complicate the healing process. A number individuals have developed serious infections following their joint replacement surgeries. Some have even required a second procedure to remove and replace the implant.
