Patients undergoing joint replacement surgery are prone to developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to a pulmonary embolism or stroke. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, Xarelto® is one of several blood thinners that provide preventive treatment for patients at risk for DVT. Xarelto® was also approved for patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), as this condition leaves patients vulnerable to blood clots and strokes.
Xarelto® has been promoted as a superior alternative to Warfarin (coumadin), a blood thinner that has been used since 1954. Manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer, the company marketing Xarelto®, market the drug as a more convenient option because it doesn’t require routine blood testing and frequent dosage adjustments. This convenience may, unfortunately, come with a heavy price. Excess bleeding is a known risk of blood thinners, and blood tests and dosing adjustments help doctors prevent uncontrolled bleeding in patients using anticoagulants.
There have been three times as many deaths from Xarelto® complications compared to Warfarin and similar medications.
There have been three times as many deaths from Xarelto® complications compared to Warfarin and similar medications. While Warfarin patients with internal hemorrhaging can be treated with high doses of vitamin K, this antidote has ineffective for Xarelto® patients. Patients who have been injured in an accident or suffered a spontaneous gastrointestinal bleed have died in the emergency room with no recourse for treatment.
A number of Xarelto® patients have also experienced blood clots, post-surgical wound infections, and hemorrhagic strokes. There have been thousands of adverse event reports filed with the FDA since the drug hit the market.
Plaintiffs across the country are now accusing Janssen (a division of Johnson & Johnson) and Bayer of failing to provide adequate warnings about the dangers associated with Xarelto®. Lawsuits question the safety of promoting a drug that requires a lower dosage and less blood monitoring when patients are experiencing deadly events.
Almost 3,000 lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Louisiana, and the number of cases continues to grow. Our firm is currently assisting California plaintiffs to file Xarelto® cases for transfer to the MDL, a form of litigation that is similar to class action, but a better option for many plaintiffs. MDL consolidates discovery for multiple cases but gives individuals the right to a unique verdict and settlement.
