A Taxotere® Lawyer May Help You Obtain Compensation for Permanent Hair Loss

Taxotere® is the most widely used treatment for breast cancer. However, while the drug can be effective, it can also lead to permanent hair loss. If you have suffered this disfiguring side effect, it can cause significant emotional damage. A Taxotere® lawyer at our San Diego, CA firm may be able to help. A growing number of patients are suing Sanofi, the manufacturer of Taxotere®. Because this lawsuit is so new, medical and legal experts are continuing to investigate the scientific claims and the most effective legal strategies. Our attorneys are familiar with many types of defective drug cases. They are honored to be on the front lines of this legal battle as they help their clients obtain the justice that they deserve.

About Taxotere® and Its Effects

Taxotere® is an intravenous form of chemotherapy, primarily used in the treatment of breast cancer. However, it can also be used to treat stomach, head, neck, prostate, and non-small cell lung cancers. Like other forms of chemotherapy, Taxotere® damages the RNA or DNA inside cancerous cells. Thus, they are no longer able to divide and multiply abnormally. At the same time, chemotherapy cannot distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous cells. Therefore, the drugs will often damage the nearby cells, including the hair follicles. For this reason, hair loss is one of the most common symptoms of chemotherapy.

We are committed to helping our patients obtain financial compensation to cover hair loss treatments, psychological counseling, and pain and suffering.

When patients begin to lose their hair, it can be devastating. Nevertheless, they are comforted by the thought that their hair will regrow in time. Unfortunately, with Taxotere®, patients’ hair may never return. In fact, according to one study at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, 6.3% of patients who took Taxotere® grew back less than 50% of their hair. Another study from the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Cancer Conference reported that up to 15% of patients who took Taxotere® suffered from extensive hair loss or permanent alopecia.

A bald womanAlong with hair loss, Taxotere® is associated with other side effects. Many of these are common with other types of chemotherapy as well. Side effects can include fatigue, anemia, low white cell count, fluid retention, and peripheral neuropathy. However, in 2012, the Journal of Clinical Oncology reported that new forms of chemotherapy (including Taxotere®) were linked to a higher risk of serious complications.

The Taxotere® Lawsuit

Discoveries about the Taxotere® side effects are very recent. It was only in 2015 that the FDA required Sanofi to add the risk of permanent alopecia to the warning label. Therefore, the related lawsuits are still in the early stages. As the number of plaintiffs continues to grow, the case may be grouped into a class action lawsuit. In this type of suit, one lawyer represents all cases, and one judge oversees the entire case. Alternatively, the Taxotere® lawsuit may be consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL). This type of case is also overseen by a single court. However, each plaintiff will have his or her own attorney, and damages will be awarded on an individual basis.
