About the Medication
Nexium® is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), effective in controlling stomach acid that causes heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is available in both a prescription and over-the-counter form. Released to the market in 2001, this popular medication has brought in millions for the manufacturer, AstraZenaca. But, beginning in 2011, Nexium® patients began filing lawsuits against the company complaining about adverse health complications.
Complications From Nexium®
The first complaints arising from Nexium® pertained to bone fractures, with reports of bones breaking without sufficient cause. In 2014, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) took action, ordering improved package warning inserts. The labels now mention risk of reduced bone density and fractures – too late, unfortunately, for many patients.
In February, 2016, CBS News reported on a startling German medical study, which found a 44 percent increased risk of dementia in long-term PPI users over age 75. The active ingredient reportedly affects proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and also leads to vitamin B12 deficiency, which is known to affect cognitive health.
The report also mentioned a Johns Hopkins University study that connected PPIs with a 20-50 percent increased risk of chronic kidney disease. Previous links had already warned of other renal conditions, including acute interstitial nephritis, an inflammatory kidney disease.
There have been several class action and individual lawsuits filed pertaining to Nexium®, many of which are still pending. Some lawsuits have accused AstraZenaca of serious wrongdoing, and the company has paid millions of dollars to settle allegations of misrepresentation, conspiracy, and consumer fraud.
If you or your loved one has suffered complications from Nexium®, our product liability attorneys may be able to help you recover significant compensation.
Personal injury lawsuits accuse the pharmaceutical giant of negligence, failure to warn, and marketing a defective drug. A recent lawsuit was filed in Illinois seeking compensation for kidney failure. After filling numerous Nexium® prescriptions, the plaintiff’s kidneys ceased functioning, and he was forced to endure a kidney transplant.
