Invokana® is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor designed to help type 2 diabetes patients control their blood sugar levels. The drug prompts the kidneys to excrete glucose through the urinary tract instead of reabsorbing it in the bloodstream. However, many patients taking Invokana®, Invokamet®, and similar drugs have been treated for serious health problems tied to the medication.
The most commonly seen complications include:
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis – When the body does not produce enough insulin, there is insufficient glucose to energize cells, and fat is broken down as an alternative energy source. This process releases acids, called ketones, in the blood. A diagnosis of ketoacidosis means toxic acid levels have accumulated. In Invokana® patients, diabetic ketoacidosis presents without high blood sugar indicators, so it is more difficult to detect. Without prompt treatment, this condition can lead to diabetic coma, and even death.
- Kidney failure – Renal failure means the kidneys have stopped filtering waste products from the bloodstream. Dangerous levels of waste build up, and the balance of electrolytes in the blood is affected. Complications of this condition include pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs), inflammation of the heart, and potentially death. Patients may require ongoing dialysis treatment or a kidney transplant to restore normal function.
Cardiac events and strokes are other serious complications that Invokana® patients have experienced. There have also been reports of bone fractures, serious urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and severe dehydration.
The first lawsuits against Invokana® manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals were filed in September, 2015. These include a Canadian class action suit with dozens of plaintiffs and a growing number of individual U.S. cases.
Plaintiffs also allege Janssen improperly promotes Invokana® as off-label treatment for weight loss and blood pressure control.
The lawsuits allege that Janssen failed to properly warn healthcare providers and patients about risks associated with Invokana®. Patients and their doctors might have chosen alternative treatment or closer monitoring to catch potential problems in their earliest stages. Plaintiffs also allege Janssen improperly promotes Invokana® as off-label treatment for weight loss and blood pressure control. These benefits have been marketed in advertising and on the Invokana® website.
Invokana® cases will likely be consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) rather than a class action lawsuit. MDL is considered a better alternative for product liability cases with multiple plaintiffs, providing efficiency for common discovery, yet allowing individualized case outcomes. Our law firm is handling Invokana® litigation for California clients. With a reputation for outstanding personal injury representation, our attorneys work hard to maximize client compensation for corporate negligence.
