About Depakote®

Depakote® is primarily used as an anti-seizure medication. However, in some cases, doctors may prescribe this drug to treat epilepsy, migraines, and certain mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder. The FDA approved the drug in 1983, and it has been commonly used to increase the amount of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). In this way, the drug can block the brain signals that lead to seizures. Scientists also believe that by balancing the levels of certain chemicals, the drug can prevent severe mood swings caused by bipolar disorder.

Depakote® Complications

The FDA requires Depakote® to carry black box warnings, stating that the drug can cause serious or even fatal liver damage. These risks are especially high in children under two years of age and for adult patients in the first six months of taking the medication. Depakote® can also cause serious and even life-threatening pancreatitis.

During this time, the company heavily promoted the drug in nursing homes for use as an anti-aggression medication among patients with dementia as well as a treatment for schizophrenia. However, the FDA never approved Depakote® for these purposes.
