How Does Actos® Work?

ACTOS® is one of the most common diabetes medications to control and lower blood sugar. The FDA approved ACTOS® in 1999. Since then, it has become one of Takeda Pharmaceuticals’ best-selling drugs. US marketer Eli Lilly and Company partnered with Takeda, making the medication even more widespread. However, many legal experts believe that covered up the serious side effects of ACTOS®, putting millions of patients at risk.

Actos® and Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is one of the most alarming complications attributed to ACTOS®. Takeda Pharmaceuticals has already been ordered to pay over $9 billion to plaintiffs, largely in response to this life-threatening side effect. A 2012 study has shown that patients prescribed this medication for longer than two years or in high doses are at a higher risk for bladder cancer. Alarmingly, during Takeda’s own clinical research, lab rats exposed to ACTOS® were found to have an increase in bladder tumors. Further evidence indicates that Takeda knew about the risks associated with ACTOS® and worked to conceal these facts. A former medical reviewer for the company testified that she was ordered to understate the incidents of bladder cancer among patients taking the drug.
